据外电报道，多家船公司高层日前在日本横滨同意联手向巴拿马运河管理局(PCA)施压，希望PCA暂缓提高运河通航费的建议，业界人士透露，苏伊士运河当局近期暗示会向改用该运河的船只提供额外优惠，因此如果PCA未能与船公司达成共识，不排除部分船只会改用苏伊士运河。

亚洲船东论坛(ASF)属下的航运经济回顾委员会日前在日本横滨举行会议，出席的船公司包括商船三井、中外运、美国总统轮船、东方海外、川崎汽船、韩进海运、现代海运、长荣海运及阳明海运等，会后发表的声明指出，「巴拿马运河通航费上升的幅度实在难以接受，尤其是对货柜船、油轮及汽车滚装轮的加幅。与会代表对PCA的建议深切关注，并认为这将对班轮公司的业务计划带来重要影响。」

另一方面，代表亦藉著苏伊士运河上月暗示争取更多行驶亚洲—美西航线的船只一事向PCA施压，声明称：「我们将慎重研究采用巴拿马运河以外航道的可能性。」该委员会同时要求ASF主席派出代表与PCA商讨，希望将提高通航费的实施日期延长，以减低每年加费的幅度。

PCA建议在2007年至2009年期间，每年将运河通航费上调10%，以减轻运河扩展工程所带来的沉重财政负担。
